Three Things Everyone Should Know Before Choosing a Dance Studio
1. WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE CLASS?
If the dance class has fewer students in it each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun. With younger students it is easier for a teacher to maintain control over the class and make sure each student understands the concepts and instructions. Our smaller class sizes make sure that no fundamental concepts are being missed. A smaller class size also allows our teachers to ensure that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique. Our studio limits all of our classes (ages 5 and up) to a maximum of just 12 students per class. With our pre-school dance classes (ages 3 – 5) we limit all of our classes to a maximum of just 9 students per class.
2. THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD TECHNIQUE.
Good technique is absolutely vital in ballet. You only have to watch a professional ballet dancer to see that his or her body – especially the legs – can do things that would be impossible for the average person. So it stands to reason that if the student tries doing those things without going about them the right way, they are going to hurt themselves.
So does it matter if your child takes ballet for only a year or two or three? They may have a later interest in jazz, , tap, modern dance or acting, all of which will benefit from a little grounding in safe, properly taught technique and artistic presentation.
So it is also if the pupil has a solid foundation in ballet technique, the poise, posture, strength, and balance will vastly improve their ability to learn new styles of dance. There have been great ballet dancers who were also great modern, tap, or jazz dancers, but seldom have there been great modern dancers, etc., who were not also strong in ballet.
Another reason that technique is so important is that ballet is about discipline. There is a reason that little girls have been made to take ballet lessons for so long. It teaches them control of the body and the mind. It teaches them to follow rules, to do as they are told, and to have fun while doing it. It teaches them to be graceful and strong. By studying proper technique they are learning what generations before them have and making it their own.
At the Academy of Dance & Music, in addition to these important details , we strive to make it a fun time for the students while giving them the necessary grounding in good basic technique.
